Prospective certificate holders must have already earned a bachelor's degree and have at least two years of Certified Internal Auditor approved work experience. They also have to submit a character reference and adhere to the Institute of Internal Auditors' Code of Ethics. To maintain CIDA designation, certificate holders must complete at least 15 hours of continuing professional education every year.

The CIDA exam is multiple choice and includes questions across the following two sections: Understanding the Investment and Derivative Structures and Auditing the Risks and Controls of Investment and Derivative Activity. Candidates have four hours to complete the exam. Specific questions cover topics including the investment process, the short-term market, equities, fundamentals of options, and SWAP mechanics and terminology. A 400-page study guide is available to those planning on taking the exam.
